The folder on the server has full access to 'me' - the user, the system etc. However while watching W7 delete I was also refreshing the servers shared folder / open files screen and seeing was being accessed.

What appears to be happening is that the open mode is showing "Read" and "no access". its as if W7 attempts one way and fails then tries again and succeeds using a different approach. Each time it fails it increments the list of items and file size so it then looks as if its finding more files to delete.

My current test started at 101Gb to delete and finished at...

I can confirm that files are being deleted. Its just misreporting it.

Its SBS 2003 std on a Fujitsu Seimens box, fully patched.

I ran the same test from another computer this morning and its gone through successfully, so I need to figure out what is different between my laptop and a desktop that would cause the problem on one machine and not the other. Only major difference is that I use a USB docking station. I may dig out an old laptop hard drive and do a test install to confirm whether the error is at a hardware or software level.

Will keep you posted.

I have been able to reproduce the error again this evening but in this case I only backed-up a small portion of the laptop, however the results appear to be the same.

I still think its something to do with the junction points, as while I watch it, its as if it loops, for example, I watch it delete Name: 0 then 1 then 2 then 0 then 1 then 2 etc.

so on the server, it shows the folder properties as this..

so we know exactly now much we start off with.

so we start the delete..

and already we have more files

and more..

more..

until I give up...

I can send you a directory listing after the backup tonight but would prefer to send it direct due to company names and other details

I use a script with robocopy to backup my laptop to SBS 2003 and then shutdown. This morning I found it paused due to the drive on the server being full. So within W7 I UNC'ed to the laptop folder to delete my new W7 backup.

Now bare in mind that the hard drive I back up to is only 500Gb. I was curious to see that W7 claimed there was 8.64Tb and over 4 million files to delete (that before I stopped it and manually deleted it via the server). Its as if it see's junctions and re-adds them into the list of files to delete. A bit like robocopy without the /XJ switch in reverse.

Just t add, there's no beta version ever installed on the laptop - only with VPC.

Its a step in the wrong direction. everything is counter productive and hard to navigate around. People work in a way that have been doing for many years and suddenly what used to work efficiently now has people thinking, for example, the classic start menu. Im sure people complain that the classic view was pants but when im running Vista, im having to look down the list for say autoroute or virtual PC, its buried with the rest of the 'Microsoft <whatever>' or Windows <whatever>. its hard to find what your looking for and you have to keep clicking on program folders to open it. Under XP it would expand for you.

Explorer, under XP, you want to go from the current folder to say the C:\ drive? no problem, click on the right hand arrow and see your list of drives / folders to go. now all I see is websites unde vista, or the other side only takes me into a limited choices.

Want to see the status of the network card? XP, right click on the toolbar icon, left click on status. Vista, right click on the network icon, then go to network center, then you can go to status.

Everything needs more clicks

UAC is easy to turn off and when I have been out on breakfix calls, I have 'under request' turned off the UAC.

Without disrespecting your Mother in Law, she's probably doesn't use her computer in the same way as business people. These people need to get things does quickly, efficiently and in a way that it familiar. Jeez, don't even mention the ribbons in Office, I have clients gone to OpenOffice because the toolbars have gone.

So, yes, im proud to not sell a Vista machine knowing that my clients at least don't have to put up with having to relearn something thats been around since 3.1 / 95

If MS do decide to permanently drop classic folders in windows 7, then I think they will lose even more customers in the future. Vista should have given them a warning, 7 will confirm it - people don't like change when its unneccessary.

Tez

ps, 64bit blue screens more than it ever did on XP - and I do have certified 64 drivers.

Re: Dual booting

Hi Willow,

Looking at the date you added the query its likely that you have already gone ahead and done something, but if you are stil in the same position let me tell all.

In order to dual boot you need to have the hard drive partitioned, this will give a drive for each operating system. However unless you get something like partition magic you will have to reinstall from scratch and on the start of the installation you can define the partitions. Downside is that you will have to restart the laptop in order to change OS

You could use Virtual PC, but it will depend on your vista level and I don't think its supported under basic. If you can install VPC 2007 (its free) you can then have XP within vista, however since you have a laptop with vista home, then its likely that this is a sub £400 laptop so its not going to have much power to drive 2 systems at the same time.

You may want to consider just going back to XP.

While you can't buy an XP machine directly, you can get a PC / Laptop with Vista Business and that will have downgrade rights. we only buy in these and are proud to say that we have not yet shipped a single 'vista running' machine to anyone.

Its all fine with technet saying that UPNP will configure ports on firewalls etc, but UPNP is dangerous so im not convinced its the best thing to suggest.

Also the doubling of the cost for less apps doesn't make sense. i.e., the loss of ISA. Now we have to buy £100+ firewalls to give the same level of security. I have clients that block net access in office hours. how's that going to work in the future?

im happy to play with it here in the office, but at a clients? not until im forced to.

your describing clustering which I don't believe is possible under any SBS / EBS version.

Only chance you have (and I have yet to try it out) is to Hyper V your domain and take snapshots and vpn those back to say an XP machine or basic server, then restore the snapshots back to an offline clone server. You would need to have at least 5 user cal for the install of the server. whether the rest of the CALs are transferable would be down to the type of CAL (OEM or VOL).

At the moment im 3Gb short of ram on our server so have not yet done an install, but I believe Hyper V is now supported in SBS.

Access 2007 and the ribbons will drive you mad

you could perform an upgrade and keep the earlier versions - good when you need to go back to earlier versions

I can't remember off the top of my head where it is, but as a tip, rather than deleteing every entry, modify them, say adding a '-test' on the end. once you see that company names change, you can refine the search and delete Hewlett-Packard-test'.

I prefer to modify incase I stop something from working and can't go back.

Tez
