If you copy...

ntbackup.exe
ntmsapi.dll
vsapi.dll

From a Windows XP or 2003 system32 directory to a new folder on your Vista install (I put it in c:\program files\ntbackup) it works just fine after ignoring the initial error message.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Re: Microsoft OEM Products

Perhaps I did not explain myself clearly enough :)

This is a new customer to me and they have recently purchased a number of Office 2003 professional and Windows XP OEM from a trusted online store, before they engaged with me.

Now, they did not buy PCs or any hardware in most cases so the licenses are not valid as far as I understand it. This generally is not made 100% clear to the end user at the time of purchase.

Even dabs.com lists the old agreement:

http://www.dabs.com/ContentTopic.aspx?ContentType=learnmore&ArticleID=486

As I understand it the OEM agreement changed on 1st September 2005 whereby buying a piece of hardware such as a hard disk or CPU along with your purchase of OEM software would not make an environment where the license would be considered valid and it must be a "fully assembled pc".

It does not take long to find products on many stores that don’t have ANY mention of the requirements. I am saying that it should be mandatory for online resellers to show the rules of the OEM license agreement at the time of purchase.

Thoughts? (and please do correct me if I am mistaken!)

Paulie

They have spent a reasonable amount of money, effectively for nothing and though it is their responsibility to investigate the licence agreements, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for them. I really think that the resellers should attach very loud and clear warnings as to the nature of the OEM licensed products.

Can Microsoft lean on trusted resellers to make OEM software more difficult to purchase? Or at least pressure them into making sure the end user really knows what they are getting?

More on migrations

Noticed this KB article "How to install Small Business Server 2003 in an existing Active Directory domain" on the MS website which is new.

I have just finished putting in an Exchange system as an upgrade from a pop3 system and 90% of the users do not yet understand how having an Exchange server extends the function of Outlook.

Of course some training is an option but getting the knowledge out to that number of users of 6 different sites is not going to be easy.

Most of them are very happy with it.

The system comes with a control panel so they are able to see at a glance
e-mail which has been quarantined and release it to the queue if they need to
do so. They can also set black/white lists and define a list of valid
e-mail addresses for thier domain which increases the accuracy further again.

The spam identification is very accurate, I have yet to receive any complaints
about valid e-mail being blocked.

If you want to have a look through the control panel send me a PM and I will
set you up with an account and you can have a look around.

Re: Post migration problem

Thanks for your help David; you pushed me in the right
direction enough to find the answer. Basically I need to change the disk
from being dynamic back to basic by modifying the boot sector.

Re: Exchange Server Intelligent Message Filter

I have not read that document as yet, but I do intend to.

I have had pretty good results with the IMF so far though. I tend not to use it these days as I have e-mail cleansed by a 3rd party for all of my customers on support contracts. I feel better about that as I know the nasties out there can't even communicate with the SBS box, saves bandwidth and reduces risk.
Re: Post migration problem

It certainly appears active in disk managment. The option to reactive is not enabled. It is running the OS so thats pretty active :D
