I have a problem with my RWW and I’m hoping you can help!

I have a nice little server that’s all set-up and working really well, I have been able to leave my office PC on and then go home and connect via RWW and continue what I was doing, great………………. Until Saturday!

I was working from home as normal when suddenly the PC at work started to shut down (I’m suspecting windows update), due to this I lost my connection. I gave it a while and tried to log back in to but no joy it said the pc I wanted to connect to was switched off or not available.

So I thought I’d see if this was actually true as I also have Teamviewer installed (strictly non-commercial use of course!) Up it popped and sure enough my office PC had rebooted and was waiting for me to log on, I did this via Teamviewer and tried to log on to the office pc again using RWW but still not joy, although it would still let me log on to the server and a number of other PC's

So the following day I rebooted the office pc and tried RWW again - still no joy, RWW still thinks it’s turned off!

Tried to log on to the Office PC from another internal PC - still no joy, RWW still thinks it’s turned off!

Using the Office PC, I thought I’d try the connection the other way so while on the Office PC I logged on to RWW to access the server – worked fine!

In summary I can connect via RWW to any of my work PC’s except my office PC but I can still use my office PC to connect to any of my other work pc’s, I’ve not changed any settings but I do suspect a Windows update related issue but this may be just cos it rebooted my office PC.

I’d be most grateful for any help and advise you can offer.

Server 2003 STD -> SBS 2008 migration

Hi there,

I have been scratching my head for a while, trying to figure out how to achieve this migration without causing too many issues. I have been finding out that the best way is to start from scratch with sbs2008, especially since the current server is only 2003 STD, with NO A/D domain.

I would appreciate any feedback/advice as to which avenue to take, and if any guides are available for this particular upgrade path, that would be very much appreciated.

Hi

I'm trying to migrate a clients sbs2003 to sbs2008 and after logging into the sbs 2008 box it reports the installation failed.

However, AD is replicating as well as Exchange in installed, Sharepoint is installed but does not work. I've tried running some wisards, move data worked for everything apart from sharepoint data, when I run the internet setup task it reports it cannot configure and to run the repair wizards.

Can I reinstall the wizards and sharepoint? or does it mean a rebuild? I'm running a virtual sbs2003 as the client is using the same hardware for the 2008 box. So can I remove installed exchange/ad parts rather than restoring from tape? (which is out of action as its attached the 2008 box)

Everything went well until i started the first updates for the sbs server

the server hanged at configuring updates: Stage3 of 3 0%

I've read in another blog that restarting the server in safe mode could solve this issue, I did and at first it looked good installation progress went to 100% but after that nothing......restarting in normal mode gives the previous message (configuring updates: Stage3 of 3 0%) So im stuck with a server that does not work.

I bought the book to specifically help me migrate from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008.

Most of it went well but now Outlook keeps prompting for a username and password.

If I type in my old credentials or click cancel, I can send and receive, but it's a pain.

This is happening on both my Vista Business Desktop, and Windows 7 Ultimate laptop.

On the laptop it alternates between asking to log onto my old server name and remote.mydomain. On the desktop it's just remote.mydomain.

Any help appreciated.

Does anyone know how to install a wildcard SSL certificate on an SBS 2008 server? I've installed the certificate in to the Local Machine Personal Certificate store (I can select it via IIS), but the "Add a trusted certificate" wizard won't pick it up or display it!

During the install I left the connection settings as default, i.e. as remote.domain.com. I have a valid GoDaddy wildcard SSL certificate that has the CN set to *.domain.com. I assume the wizard is looking for proper/legit remote.domain.com certificate and ignoring the wildard cert. Anyone have any ideas? Can I manually launch the TrustedCert.exe wizard with a specific parameter for example?

I can manually attach the SSL certificate to the various IIS sites, but I don't know exactly what the wizard is achieving under the hood..

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! My initial question regards the hardware platform. It comes with 160Gbyte drive and we have bought 2 x 1TByte drives to be arranged in a RAID 1 way.

1. Do we keep the 160 drive and use that to install SBS or remove it and install on the RAID setup?

2. Is it normal to default the internal DN to <ourname>.local. I am not sure how this is used by users on the network and want it to be sensible.

We have a new client that has asked us to install a new SBS 2008 server. They currently have a SBS 2003 server, a 2003 server as a terminal server and 55 client computers.

If we had install and managed the SBS 2003 server we would have performed a migration but as we don't know the history of the server and there are numerous errors in the logs, I feel it would be too risky! My understanding is that over the past 5 years it has been supported by a number of different companies.

I have spoken to a couple of SBS people and their view is unless you have been supporting a server from the beginning or for a decent period of time and feel it is in good shape it is not worth the stress of a failed migration.

What do you think?

My only issue with a clean install is the amount of time our guys will be onsite to remove the client computers from the old domain and onto the new domain as well as having to reload the terminal server. Can anyone please advise if there is a way to remove the termianl server from the old domain and join a new domain without having to reload it? And what is the quickest and proven way to complete the workstations?

Thank you.

Outlook 2007 prompts for username after migration

At one of my clients sites, 3 of the users are running outlook 2007 (sp2) and 6 are running outlook 2003

Love the book, and have followed it to the letter so far.

Good stuff and nice to have this in front of me whilst I try and do this migration. Im not sure if you can help, but I cant find anyone else on the web with this problem and thought someone here may have seen this.

Yes, I have followed your intructions to the letter and prepared my sbs2003 box. Run the migration tool on it, and created my answer file.

Now, moved to my new box which is running on Hyper-V sitting on Server 2008 Hyper-V role server.

So I start the install and all goes great up until the end when I get to the page where it checks my server is ready to go. The first time I ran this I had forgotton to reboot my 2003 box so it failed and said that the domain and exchange werent ready and that I had not run the migration wizard.

So I rebooted my source server and started again totally.

Now, it gets to the same bit but now there is only one problem. The new box now says only one thing at this point says that I have not run the migration tool on the source server or I have not completed the migration in the required time scale.

Thats it, I cant go any further.

I thought it could be a time thing but my source server and new Hyper-V box have exactly the same time and date and timezone. I have detached my new hyper-v box from time synchronisation on the hyper-v manager and set my answer file to allow me to set the new server time so I can check the time exactly matches.

So I am stuckand clueless as to whats wrong. Phew...

When I finally disconnected the 2003 from the domain by dcpromo I am stuck with a network of computers which can no longer connect to domain computers shares also I am unable to connect a scanner using SMB.

We can only connect to worstation shares which are not joined to the domain.

Would really appreciate any help to solve this asap.

Thanks'

I've done a bit of reading up on migrating SBS2003 to SBS2008, however the situation i find myself in is a little different.

Basically, two companies which both have SBS2003 are looking to merge, with a single SBS2008 at the new premises.

Is such a migration possible and even worth considering? I'm assuming one SBS2003 server would be migrated via the SBS migration wizard, and then second would have to be migrated using a more 'manual' / 'hands--on' approach using ADMT?

Any advice or views on this are most welcome!

Regards,
Robin

I have a new install of SBS 2008 standard and it works great and meets all my needs. The type of work I do means that any data I store must be encrypted. I configured Bitlocker on all the data drives on the server which works great and encrypts all my data. I configured the sbs backup wizard and I'm using 2 USB externally attached hard disks. The backup works great but I would like to know if the backup data on the external drives is encrypted. If it is not then how can I backup my data in a encrypted way. I have to store all my data encrypted irrespective of it's location. A consultant I spoke to (and who charged me a fortune) recently advised that the backup data is encrypted but I am not convinced.

I'd be really grateful for some advice on this.

Thanks,
